Project on production and distribution of fortified rice

Processing and Distribution of fortified rice at the rice processing unit at Kalankuttiya comes under the National Food Promotion Board has been started as a national programme aiming school children in specifically identified districts. The objective of this project is to prevent iron deficiency anaemia among primary school children through providing a supplementary meal as 75 grams of rice containing iron and folic acids as a meal per day. The target is to feed about 500,000 children in 12 districts per day. This programme is funded by the World Food Programme and have additionally been supported to improve and rehabilitate the rice processing unit at Kalankuttiya. The programme is implemented with the collaboration and under the monitoring of the Ministry of Health and Ministry of education. In year 2024 about 232 schools were provided with this meal in Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts. This project will be continued in year 2025 too.
